The Foundation for Bastrop's South End District Is Being Built
Sometimes, progress doesn't make headlines.
Sometimes it happens around conference tables, in planning sessions, through community conversations, and with volunteers who believe enough in a vision to keep showing up.
If you've been wondering why things have seemed quiet around the South End District, the answer is simple:
We've been building the foundation.
The South End District isn't just another neighborhood project. It is a long-term investment in preserving history, celebrating culture, strengthening community, and creating opportunities for future generations. Officially established by the Bastrop City Council through Resolution R-2025-158, the district was created to honor Bastrop's African American heritage while promoting neighborhood vitality and preserving the living culture of the historic South End.
More Than a Name
The South End District serves as the foundation for a much larger vision.
Its signature initiative, the South End Cultural Corridor, will transform the area from College Street to Ferry Park into a living gallery that tells the story of Bastrop through public art, murals, oral history, and community spaces.
This isn't about painting walls.
It's about telling stories.
It's about making sure every generation understands the people, places, and events that shaped this community.
What We're Working On
A tremendous amount of work is already underway behind the scenes.
Current efforts include:
Developing the South End District's visual identity, including branding, colors, banners, street toppers, and wayfinding signage.
Establishing a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that will allow the district to receive donations, pursue grants, and build long-term sustainability.
Working with artists to match creative concepts to specific mural locations throughout the corridor.
Preparing grant strategies for public art, historic revitalization, and cultural programming beginning in 2027.
The Cultural Corridor
The Cultural Corridor will feature several key project areas, including:
College Street historical pillars
Connector murals and mosaic walls
Highway 71 underpass artwork
Ferry Park as the district's first anchor mural location
Many of these projects require coordination with TxDOT, making careful planning essential before artwork can begin.
Preserving Stories Before They're Lost
One of the most exciting initiatives is the Oral History Project.
Before murals go up, we want to capture the voices of the people who lived this history.
Longtime residents will be invited to share memories about growing up in the South End, neighborhood traditions, churches, schools, businesses, family life, and the experiences that cannot be found in history books.
Those stories will become part of a lasting documentary archive that preserves the heart of the South End for generations to come.
This Is Community-Led
The South End District belongs to the community.
As the nonprofit organization is established, there will be opportunities for residents and supporters to:
Help design street signage
Participate in banner designs
Share personal stories
Paint community murals
Serve on subcommittees
Support the district through donations
This work will only succeed because of community ownership and participation.
